Balanced comforter drop
Covers the mattress side and may hide part of the foundation while staying clearly above the floor.
Long bedspread-style drop
Approaches the floor, adding formal coverage but increasing dust contact, weight and laundry bulk.
Measure the made bed in three places
Measure mattress width, the vertical distance from mattress top to floor and the mattress-plus-topper depth. Repeat at both sides when the floor or frame is uneven.

The side-drop formula is simple
Subtract mattress width from comforter width, then divide the remainder by two. This assumes the layer is centered and both sides receive equal fabric.
For an 88-inch comforter over a 60-inch Queen, the nominal result is 14 inches per side. If the mattress top is 26 inches above the floor, about 12 inches of floor clearance remains.
Foot drop is a separate length decision
Comforter length must cover the mattress length plus the amount retained near the pillows and the desired foot extension. Side width cannot solve a short foot.
California King and tall sleepers need particular attention to length. Do not rotate a rectangular comforter without recalculating side coverage.
Deep mattresses consume the same visible drop
A thick mattress exposes more vertical side surface, so a standard-width comforter may end near its lower seam instead of hiding the foundation. Add width deliberately rather than automatically buying King for Queen.

Keep practical clearance from the floor
Floor contact collects dust, hair and moisture and can catch under feet or drawers. Low platforms often need less width than tall traditional frames.
Measure clearance with the bed fully assembled. If a long drop is essential, compare a bedspread or coverlet system designed for styling rather than forcing a very bulky comforter to do both jobs.

US comforter size names are not binding standards. Verify the exact selected variant and account for possible shrinkage only according to maker guidance.
Photography can hide the opposite side or use a smaller mattress. Finished inches and your own measurements are the evidence that matters.
